Hong Kong is widely known as a great place for shopping and eating. And some know it as one of the world’s top financial hubs. What many might not realize is that Hong Kong is well on its way to being a center of tech entrepreneurship and startups. Hong Kong’s tech start-up ecosystem has great potential for acceleration, building on unique strengths. There is no doubt that Hong Kong is well placed to allow entrepreneurs and their new startups to tap into both the territory’s financial industry as well as the hardware manufacturing hub that’s just a metro ride over the border in the mainland China city of Shenzhen.
In a world where startups have become the number one driver of economic growth and job creation while large corporations continue to cut down on their workforce, Hong Kong cannot afford to rest on its past achievements and legacy industries and it is not.
Join us to hear representatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and its trade promotion agencies outline the steps and initiatives that Hong Kong is taking to build on its status of a technology hub. These representatives will be joined by Canadian industry executives to discuss how quickly Hong Kong is moving on the technology agenda.
We will discuss how these efforts are relevant for Ottawa based companies, the opportunities for start-ups, export of technologies to the Asian market, technology commercialization, and IP monetization/trading and much more. A key feature of the event will be the upcoming Canadian missions to Hong Kong in the tech area and why and how Ottawa based companies should join.

Kathy Chan
Director, HKETO Toronto

Miss Kathy Chan joined the Hong Kong Special Administration Government in 1999 as a member of the Administrative Officer Grade.
Before taking up the Director post in the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto in November 2015, she had worked in different offices, including the Home Affairs Bureau, the Home Affairs Department, the then Economic Development and Labour Bureau, the Shanghai Office and the Education Bureau.

Before coming to Toronto, Miss Chan served as the Principal Assistant Secretary for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, responsible for policy matters on support for small and medium enterprises, postal services, and trade relations of Hong Kong with the Mainland and Taiwan.  
Miss Chan received her Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

 

Andrew Yui
Director, Canada, HKTDC

Andrew was appointed Director, Canada of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) in July 1993. HKTDC is Hong Kong’s statutory body responsible for the promotion of international trade (imports and exports) in merchandise, services and technologies, via the Hong Kong platform. The Council works through a network of more than 40 offices worldwide. Andrew Leads the Council’s Canadian operations and the HKTDC team located in Toronto.
“Team HKTDC Canada”, in close co-operation with many like-minded public and private-sector multipliers, assists Canadian companies from coast to coast in accessing and reassessing their business opportunities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the rest of Asia through the Hong Kong platform. Prior to his emigration from Hong Kong to Canada, Andrew held trade development and promotion posts including Assistant Manager of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Market Officer at HKTDC headquarters, and Attaché commercial for the Government of Québec Office in Hong Kong.

 

Shirley Wong
Head of Investment Promotion(Canada), Invest Hong Kong

Ms. Wong is the Head of Investment Promotion (Canada) of Invest Hong Kong, the Government Department responsible for attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment.  Represented in 28 cities worldwide, InvestHK has helped thousands of companies to set up and expand in Hong Kong since its inception in 2000.   As the principal representative, she oversees all foreign direct investments from Canada into Hong Kong. Over the years, she has consulted and assisted companies from a wide range of sectors in devising their Asian expansion strategies and implementing their business plans in Hong Kong.  Prior to joining Invest Hong Kong, Ms. Wong was a management consultant and corporate banker with professional experience in Asia and Canada. InvestHK has helped thousands of companies to set up and expand in Hong Kong since its inception in 2000.   As the principal representative, she oversees all foreign direct investments from Canada into Hong Kong. Over the years, she has consulted and assisted companies from a wide range of sectors in devising their Asian expansion strategies and implementing their business plans in Hong Kong.  Prior to joining Invest Hong Kong, Ms. Wong was a management consultant and corporate banker with professional experience in Asia and Canada.

 

 

Laura Yu
Business Development Manager OCE

Laura Yu, Business Development Manager, Academic Entrepreneurship

Laura is Business Development Manager of Academic Entrepreneurship at the Ontario Centres of Excellence. She manages the Campus Entrepreneurship Network at post-secondary institutions that were created by the province to drive youth engagement in entrepreneurship and support academic-linked start-ups. She also develops and manages linkages with global incubators and accelerators in the start-up ecosystem to foster collaborations and sharing of best practices. Previously, Laura develops and supports industry-academic projects and start-up opportunities. Her areas of focus are advanced health technologies, including healthcare IT, medical devices and life sciences, as well as energy and clean tech.

Prior to joining OCE, Laura spent 3 years as R&D Engineer developing medical devices for chronic back pain management and spinal disease, which are distributed worldwide.

Laura holds a PhD in Biomedical/Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto.

 

Jonathan Lee
Director of Sales, Asia Pacific, C-Com Satellite Systems

Jonathan Lee has worked for C-COM Satellite Systems, Inc. as Director of Sales, Asia Pacific. He has over 25 years of experience in international business, including as Country Director, China with Shin Satellite Plc; and Business Development Manager with Shinawatra International Plc. He has an MBA from the Asian Institute of Technology, and a B. Eng from the Beijing Institute of Technology.
